When it comes to free antivirus for Windows computer, your friends will mostly recommend you either Avast Free Antivirus 2019, AVG AntiVirus FREE 2019, or Avira Free Antivirus 2019. But which one of them is the best? All are completely for free and offers plenty of advanced features. Weâll take a look at details on Avast and AVG.
Two biggest competitors, Avast and AVG, are today a single company. In October 2016 Avast acquired AVG company for $1.3B. From the end-user point of view, there is no change, both brands continue to coexist together. However, they use the same engine and technology in the background â the one from Avast. Feature-wise there are small differences, letâs take a closer look.
Since Avast's acquisition of AVG a couple years ago, this product and Avast Security (for Mac) are now, if not siblings, at least cousins. On the PC side, the two free antivirus products are. Besides the Worldâs most popular antivirus for Windows, Avast is offering a comprehensive antivirus for Apple Mac OS X (Macintosh). The product is called Avast Free Mac Security 2018 (version 11) and same as the Windows version itâs completely for free. Best Mac Antivirus Software. You need an antivirus program on your Mac. That statement may cause some Apple users to argue or walk away, but 2017 has so far seen more Mac malware and adware than.
Feature Comparison Table â Does AVG Offer More Than Avast?
Both Avast and AVG are offering solid protection against viruses, spyware, malware, rootkits and even ransomware which is a big topic now. Plus you will be secured while browsing online, chatting on Facebook, or watching videos on YouTube. Also, they will protect and scan your incoming and outgoing e-mails if you are using an e-mail client like Outlook or Thunderbird. If youâre a gamer, you can relax â both antivirus solutions offer smart gaming mode and keep themselves silent.
With Avast you will get some cool features like Wi-Fi Inspector (formerly called Home Network Security), which scans your home network, Wi-Fi connection, and routers. An easy-to-use tool called Browser Cleanup for removing unwanted toolbars from your browser. Software Updater for monitoring the up-to-date status of the other software like browser, Java, Adobe Reader, etc. And you can ask your IT friend to fix your computer via the secured remote connection.
However, there are some differences. AVG offers spying and data theft protection controlling what kind of data you are sharing with the other applications, and File Shredder which can permanently delete your sensitive information, so they canât be restored. A similar feature called Data Shredder is available also in Avast, but only in the top-tier product Avast Premier, not in the free one.
A big plus for AVG is that you donât need to register or give out any personal information. You can just download, install, and keep using it. With Avast you have to activate the product within the first 30 days, and then once a year.
Impact on the System Resources â Which Product is Lighter?
We have measured the impact on the system resources using two ways:
In the boot time test where less is better, it took only 28 seconds (on average) to load Windows desktop when Avast Free Antivirus was installed. The same operation took 33 seconds (on average) when AVG AntiVirus FREE was installed. Default boot-time without any antivirus solution in place took 20 seconds. So according to our testing, Windows loads faster with Avast.
In the second area, we have tested computer performance in various areas and impact of the AVG or Avast on the results. Test results (higher is better) were practically the same for both products, 2,116 points for Avast and 2,115 points for AVG. The default performance without any antivirus installed was 2,150 points. So the overall impact on the system performance is really low for both products.
Final performance test results are highlighted in the chart below. You can clearly see the difference between no antivirus and Avast or AVG present. Please note the vertical axis âPerformance Scoreâ is not starting from 0, but from 2,110 to clearly show the small differences.
Avast vs. AVG â Performance Test Results
You can find more details about how we tested in the âAdditional Notesâ section at the end of the article.
User Interface â Is Avast Easier to use Than AVG?
Avast user interface is really nice and clear. There is only one main action leading to the Smart Scan, which runs all seven Avast scans: compatibility, viruses, outdated software, browser add-ons, router issues, performance, and weak passwords. The green button âUPGRADEâ (or âACTIVATEâ) leads to a comparison table of Avast Free Antivirus and Avast premium product (Avast Internet Security).
The status is also indicated by color when green obviously means âYou are protectedâ (note AVG is using the exact same term). Also, you are assured that âEverything is up-to-dateâ. The top menu is easy to navigate and structured in fours groups â Scan, Tools, Passwords, and Store. What is pretty annoying is the top menu disappears every time you go from the home screen and you need to click on âMenuâ to get it back.
Same as AVG, also Avast is using the bottom space for the up-sell offers.
AVG user interface is quite busy compared to Avast. When everything is fine, you will see green tick marks with the message âYou are protectedâ. The interface will go red if there will be some issue. What is nice is when some of the shields are disabled, you will see immediately which ones as they will also turn in red.
AVG AntiVirus FREE 2019 â User Interface
The main tiles show you the status of the specific shield protection. If you are looking for a scan, itâs the less visible button âScan nowâ. The âFix performanceâ button sounds pretty interesting, but you need to download other product (AVG PC TuneUp) to actually fix the performance. The last button is for checking if the program is up-to-date, of course, the virus definitions are updated automatically. âJoin us on Facebookâ link at the top bar is very visible and somehow distracting.
Bottom of the interface is used as an offer space to buy or try for free the paid-for version.
Localizations/Translations â Is The Product Available in my Language?
Both Avast and AVG are available in plenty of languages, of course for free. But Avast offers many more.
Avast languages (46): Arabic, Belorussian, Bengali, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese (simplified), Chinese (traditional), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English (United States/United Kingdom), Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Malay, Norwegian, Persian, Pirate talk, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil/Portugal), Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu and Vietnamese
AVG languages (22): Chinese (simplified), Chinese (traditional), Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Spanish, Turkish.
Popularity â Which is the Most Popular Free Antivirus? Avast or AVG?
The better product is, the most users it has. Itâs simple as that. However, itâs not easy to say which is the most popular antivirus, if Avast or AVG. For expressing popularity we are using several, publicly accessible methods.
1. Official Sources
According to the official website, Avast is protecting more than 400 million users worldwide, but that probably includes also AVG users. The last publicly available number was 230 million users. AVG doesnât state anymore how many users are using their products, however using simple math itâs around 170 million (400 â 230 = 170). Therefore we believe itâs safe to claim Avast has more users than AVG.
2. Antivirus Vendor Market Share by OPSWAT
OPSWAT is regularly releasing reports about the antivirus market share. Data are based on the OPSWAT GEARS software installed on the client machines. According to the latest report from November 2017, Avast is dominating the worldwide market with 18.48%. Followed by ESET with 13.97%. AVG is still reported as a separate company and didnât make it into top 10 for June 2017, however, AVGâs share was around 4% in the last few months. It is also important to mention Microsoft for some reason is not included at all.
Avast vs. AVG â Market Share Report November 2017 by OPSWAT
3. CNET Download.com Ranking
Download.com by CNET is the Worldâs most popular download portal. According to its popularity rankings, AVG has more total downloads â almost 564 million, while Avast has âonlyâ 406 million. However, the recent trend shows Avast is slightly more popular, as it leads the last week downloads number.
Avast vs. AVG â Number of Downloads & Rating on CNET Download.com June 2017
Avast has higher editorâs ratingâ 4 stars (meaning excellent), while AVG has 3.5 stars (meaning very good). The user/community rating is also better for Avast â 4.5 stars, while AVG has 4 stars.
4. Number of Fans on Social Media Networks
Another way how to measure product/company popularity is the number of fans/followers on social media networks like Facebook and Twitter. Avast is leading on Facebook with 4.1 million fans vs. AVGâs 3.1 million. On Twitter, the leader is AVG with 216k followers vs. Avastâs 181k.

Independent Labs Test Results â Will AVG Protect You Better Than Avast?
If you are looking for a more advanced comparison of antivirus protection, the best resources are the independent test labs. These labs are regularly performing various tests like how many viruses will get through the antivirus software, or which vendor offers better performance.
Selection of the most important and relevant test results is below:
As we mentioned the antivirus engine is the same for both products and thatâs also visible in tests. In the latest AV-Comparatives Real-World Protection Test from May 2017, both Avast and AVG got 100% detection rate with 0 false-positives. Both products also scored the same score on the latest Performance Test.
Respected computer magazine PCMag gives both products the same rating of 4,5 stars in their comprehensive comparison of free antivirus solutions written by security expert Neil J. Rubenking. Actually, both Avast and AVG are their #1 recommendation for the free antivirus software.
Our current Editorsâ Choice products for free antivirus utility are Avast Free Antivirus and AVG AntiVirus Free. Both get very good scores from the independent labs, and in our own tests as well. Both include some useful bonus features.
Neil J. Rubenking for PCMag
System Requirements & Compatibility â Will the Product Run on my Computer?
Both products will run on a majority of todayâs computers as there are no special requirements. In fact, the system requirements are identical since the antivirus engine is the same. You just need to run a newer Windows than 2000, so at least Windows XP with Service Pack 3. Both Avast and AVG are also fully compatible with the latest Windows 10.

Test Conclusion â Both Avast and AVG are Worth of Trying!
Both products have their pros and cons. We donât want to recommend only one of them, instead, we would like to encourage you to try both, and see if Avast or AVG will suit you better. Even they are offered completely for free, the level of protection you will get is comparable with the paid-for antivirus solutions. The download links are below.

Avast Internet Security 2019: Full Review
Below you can find the full review, test methods, and data sources
How We Test
Using the best antivirus to protect yourself online is crucial.
To know whether Avast Internet Security 2019 is for you, we have analyzed it in detail according to 6 categories. As all of them are important, but not equal, they each have a different impact on the final score.
In the graph below you can see each category, and the impact it has on Avastâs final score. If you donât know what the categories mean, keep reading. We explain each in detail, tell you how Avast scored, and which data sources we have used.

The Good: Avast has excellent protection scores in the tests, scoring ahead of the industry average on Windows 10, Mac, and Android. Great!
The Bad: Nothing.
What is a protection test?
The independent test labs, AV-Test and AV-Comparatives, analyze the best antivirus software several times per year. One of the categories they test, is called protection.
In this test, the antivirus programs are subjected to a range of challenges that test their entire range of security features. These features can be divided into three segments:
1. Protection from known malware
Known malwareare malware that have been discovered before. When a cybersecurity discovers a malware threat, it uploads its digital signature to a huge online database for future use.
You can imagine this digital signature as the fingerprint of a burglar. It is unique to the malware, and can help the antivirus to easily recognize it. Just as the police would use the fingerprint to identify the burglar.
On your device, the antivirus frequently runs system checks. During such a check, it scans for digital signatures to see if there are any malware infections.
This method is the most straightforward of the 3 security segments. It is called signature-based detection, but also often called virus scanning.
2. Protection from unknown malware
More complex are unknown malware samples. After all, these have never been seen before, so how to detect them? The signature-based method described above it useless against these new threats.
Here, a different strategy comes into play. The antivirus use something called heuristic file scanning. What this means, is that rather than searching for digital signatures, the antivirus search for suspicious behavior.
Imagine suspicious behavior as anything a normal program wouldnât do. For instance, rapid file replication across a network, file deletion, or the hiding of specific files.
When an antivirus discovers such behavior, it flags the program executing it as potential malware. It then moves the malware to a safe environment, called a sandbox, where it can securely analyze the program without it being able to cause damage.
3. Protection from user-focused threats
More an more cybercriminals target users directly these days. You have probably been targeted yourself. Common examples are:
Ebayscams. Imagine you are attempting to sell something on Ebay. Quickly someone, often from Nigeria, contacts you. He or she requests you to first send the product, after which you will receive payment. Just to check the quality of the product, he or she says. Of course, in reality, payment will never come.
Phishing scams. Imagine an email arrives in your inbox. It says âurgent, verification requiredâ. It seems to come from PayPal, and it requests you to verify your login details. In truth, however, the email comes from a cybercriminal attempting to trick you into handing over your login details.
As these type of attacks are not classical malware threats, antivirus had to evolve their protection methods. These days, they include many advanced features such as anti-phishing, spam filters, wifi scanners, web advisors, and many more.
Avast 2019: Windows 10 protection score
Avast scores a 9.4 in the protection tests for Windows 10. This places it ahead of the industry average, including McAfee, BullGuard, and Panda. But it still falls behind Norton and BitDefender, who both have a perfect score.
Avast 2019: Mac protection score
Avast, just like BitDefender and Norton, scores perfect antivirus test scores for Mac.
Avast 2019: Android protection score
Avast scores excellently on Android as well. Easily surpassing the industry average, and falling online slightly behind Norton and BitDefender, who achieved a perfect score.

The Good: Avast scores around the industry average on Windows 10. Meaning it only has a small speed impact and can be safely used.
The Bad: The same cannot be said for Mac, however. Here Avast has a significant speed penalty.
What is a performance test?
To keep you safe, antivirus operate in the background of your PC or Mac, scanning your system at regular intervals. Although this requires some resources from your device, it is often not noticeable.
However, in some cases, antivirus software require too many resources to do their job well. It can then have a severe negative speed impact.
The independent test labs analyze the antivirus software for their speed impact on Windows and Mac.
Avast 2019: Windows 10 performance score
Avast does fairly well on Windows 10, having only a limited performance impact. It still falls behind BitDefender and McAfee though, which both require less resources to do their job.
Avast 2019: Mac performance score
Avast Antivirus For Mac Reviews
There is no way around saying it: Avast should not be used on MacBooks. The performance impact is simply too great. In both Mac tests by AV-Test since January 2017, Avast had a significant speed impact on Appleâs operating software.
The Good: Avast offers a complete security solution for Windows and Android. On Windows, we would definitely recommend the paid versions. On Android, the free one is all there is, and it is really good.
The Bad: Protection for Mac is limited, but not bad. Before installing it though, keep in mind that Avast for Mac has a terrible performance impact.
What is a supported devices test?
We analyze the supported operating software and the security features offered on each. We also compare this to the other antivirus to see which offer the best protection per device.
A note on iOS:
Not all antivirus create an antivirus app for iOS.
Although it is true that iOS is a safer platform than Windows, Mac, and Android, users could still benefit from a security solution that offers them anti-theft, a VPN, a web advisor, and perhaps some parental controls.
Avast 2019: Devices and features score
Avast is a little different than most antivirus providers, as it offers its basic antivirus for free. Outside of that difference though, it follows the same formula as the rest: Extensive security features for Windows, several for Android, a few for Mac, and almost none for iOS.
For Windows 10, Avastâs free version offers its antivirus software, password manager, and wifi security advisor. The paid versions add anti-ransomware, anti-phishing, a firewall, sandbox, file shredder, webcam protection, and a VPN on top.
Overall, the paid versions are definitely worth the upgrade from the free version. Although we would opt for BitDefender as it offers better protection for Windows at a lower price.
For Mac, Avast offers antivirus, wifi protection, and anti-phishing. All for free. Pay a bit extra, and it adds anti-ransomware on top. It should be said though, that Avast has such a big speed penalty on Macbookâs that we donât recommend using it here.
For Android, its app is for free and a very complete security solution. It comes with antivirus, anti-theft, app-lock, VPN, and wifi speed check. It sadly didnât have the same protection scores as Norton and BitDefender, but hey, itâs freeâ¦
For iOS, there is no antivirus available. However, Avast does offer its standalone VPN and password manager.
The Good: Avast knocks it out the park. Over 5 million reviews ( 5 million ! ) rate it with a 9.1 in the Google Play Store. That is incredible.
The Bad: Nothing
What is a user review test?
User reviews play an important role when selecting a product. Sadly, however, they have also become a marketing tool. Used by many product manufacturers and comparison sites alike, to sell products.
It is therefore important to select the sources of the user reviews well. In our test, we analyze the user reviews from TrustPilot and the Google Play Store.
TrustPilot is the leading independent platform for verified user reviews. And the Google Play Store being the gateway to apps on Android, simply has the largest amount of user reviews in the world.
Avast 2019: User review score
Avast has an incredible amount of positive user reviews. In the Google Play Store, it has over 5 million positive reviews, rating it with a 9.1.
In TrustPilot, the average comes down a bit. Here around 2500 users rate Avast with a 7.4, which is still a decent score.
The Good: Avast offers a free antivirus for Android, which is a great product, offering excellent value for (no) money.
The Bad: To get complete protection for Windows, you would need to opt for one of the paid options, which are more expensive than the competition.
What is a value for money test?
We compare the protection, bonus features, and price, to the offering of the other antivirus software in the market.
Avast 2019: Value for money score
Avast offers a few free products, of which the antivirus for Android is highly commendable. It is a very complete security solution with over 5 million user reviews in the Google Play Store.
For Windows, it would be better to opt for the paid versions, as the free version is very basic. However, the paid versions are a fair bit more expensive than the competition by BitDefender, Panda, and BullGuard.
For Mac, there isnât really any value for money to speak of. Avast for Mac has such a significant speed impact, it should simply not be used.
The Good: Avast has very few false positives on Windows, Mac, and Android. Meaning it wonât mistake many clean files for malware.
The Bad: Nothing
What is a false positive test?
When an antivirus program mistakes regular software for malware, this is called a false positive. It is nothing to worry about, but can be annoying when it happens frequently.
AV-Test and AV-Comparatives both measure the number of false positives the antivirus software have across the various operating software.
Avast 2019: Windows 10 false positives score
Avast does well on Windows 10, scoring before Norton, Panda, and BullGuard. Only slightly behind BitDefender and McAfee.
Avast 2019: Mac false positives score
Avast scores a perfect score for Mac, as did all the other tested antivirus.
Avast 2019: Android false positives score
Avast scored slightly ahead of the industry average, and just behind Norton and BitDefender, who both scored a perfect score.
Data Sources
Below you can find all the sources we have used in our analysis
Data sources we use
Protection, performance, and false positives data:
Protection, performance and false positives make up the core of any antivirus analysis. Thatâs why, together, they account for 70% of the total score. The data comes from AV-Test and AV-Comparatives, the two leading IT security test labs.
The two European test labs set up several tests per year. For our analysis, we have included each test since January 2017. This spans over 20 antivirus software, challenged in more than 30 tests.
We found BitDefender, Norton, Panda, BullGuard, McAfee, and Avast, to be the best across all platforms.
User review data:
Our user review data comes from Trustpilot and the Google Play Store.
TrustPilot is one of the largest websites of its kind, having collected more than 45 million user reviews, covering over 200.000 companies.
The Google Play Store is the place where Android users, the most used operating system for mobile phones in the world, get their apps. It has an incredible amount of user reviews. For example, Norton and Avast combined have nearly 7 million reviews there.
